Winery Christina

Carnuntum - Austria

More information about 'Christina'

Christina, who grew up on the family estate of Weingut Netzl, developed a passion for winemaking at a young age. She learned the craft from her father and went on to study oenology and wine management.

An internship in London broadened her knowledge of international wines, particularly those from small organic producers. Upon returning to the vineyards with her parents in 2007, she focused on discovering the unique style of the Carnuntum region.

After years of experimentation, the estate transitioned to organic production in 2013, later evolving to 100%. With her creative mindset, she launched her own natural wine line in 2015 alongside the classic Netzl wines.

This resulted in four delightful natural wines (unfiltered & 100% naturally fermented) that we enjoy today!

The vineyards of Christina in Carnuntum

The climate

Carnuntum is located in the southernmost and warmest wine region of Lower Austria, along the Danube. It is characterized by dry summers and relatively warm autumns, allowing the grapes to ripen optimally. It is an extension of the Pannonian Plain, benefiting from a unique microclimate and protected from cold northern winds by forests. The Danube helps regulate and soften temperature extremes.

The terroir

Christina works with three different vineyards: Bärnreiser (Merlot), Aubühel (Cabernet Sauvignon) and Haidäcker (Zweigelt). The soil here mainly consists of loam and loess, with a top layer of red gravel.

Viticulture in Carnuntum

Carnuntum is a wine region that has gained recognition over recent decades for its red wines, particularly those based on Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch grape varieties. The region has a rich winemaking history and is known for its favorable climate and soil composition.

One of the winemakers in this region is, of course, Christina. She has a strong commitment to sustainable viticulture, which lies at the core of her approach to grape growing. Her philosophy focuses on preserving the natural environment and minimizing the impact on the ecosystem.

Christina’s vineyards benefit from the soil diversity of Carnuntum, resulting in wines with a wide range of flavor profiles. In addition to the dominant varieties Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, the estate also cultivates other grapes such as Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery has received significant recognition for producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique characteristics of Carnuntum.

In summary, Carnuntum plays an important role in the Austrian wine scene, and Christina contributes to the region’s reputation by focusing on sustainability and crafting wines with character and expression.
