A look behind the story of 'Del Grillo'
The Del Grillo estate is a genuine family-owned winery located in the province of Trapani, Sicily. For three generations, the family has been committed exclusively to organic farming, with the majority of the estate dedicated to vineyards. A significant part of the property is planted with olive groves, while other areas are home to orchards and a small plot cultivated with durum wheat.
Each indigenous grape variety is vinified separately using a minimal intervention approach, allowing every grape to express its unique personality. The wines are filtered and clarified without the use of animal-derived products, making them suitable for a vegan lifestyle. To ensure each variety thrives in its ideal environment, the vineyards are spread across three distinct locations, each offering its own unique terroir.
Indigenous Sicilian varieties such as Zibibbo, Grillo, Catarratto and Nero d'Avola find their purest and most authentic expression here. Their distinctive character, remarkable freshness and pronounced minerality make Azienda Agricola Del Grillo an unforgettable discovery and a true asset for every passionate wine lover.

The vineyards of Del Grillo
Climate
Azienda Agricola Del Grillo is located in the province of Trapani, in western Sicily, where the vineyards benefit from a typical Mediterranean climate. Warm, sunny days ensure optimal grape ripening, while the cooler nights at higher elevations preserve freshness and aromatic intensity. The constant influence of the Mediterranean Sea breeze reduces disease pressure and allows the grapes to ripen slowly and healthily.
Terroir
The vineyards are mainly planted on gently rolling sandy and clay soils. This combination offers several advantages:
- excellent drainage thanks to the sandy soils;
- sufficient water retention provided by the clay;
- deep root development;
- a distinctive mineral expression in the wines.
The Grillo and Catarratto vineyards in Contrada Chirchiaro are located at approximately 450 metres above sea level, which is exceptional for Sicily. The higher elevation provides cooler nights, slower ripening and a better balance between ripe fruit and vibrant acidity.
Viticulture
Organic viticulture for three generations
The Del Grillo family has practised organic farming exclusively for three generations. No synthetic herbicides or pesticides are used on the estate. In addition to the vineyards, olive groves, orchards and a small plot of durum wheat contribute to the estate's rich biodiversity and healthy ecosystem.
