A look behind the story of 'Vazisubani Estate'
Vazisubani literally translates as "Place of the Vines" (Vazi = vine and Subani = neighbourhood or settlement). This magnificent estate was founded in 1891 by the Georgian nobleman and wine pioneer Sulkan Chavchavadze. It is located in Kakheti, Georgia's most renowned wine region. The château is surrounded by a beautiful park, with the vineyards stretching out across the surrounding landscape.
During the last century, the estate gradually fell into decline. It was not until 2013 that a major restoration project was launched to return it to its former glory. The vineyards were replanted, and the entire estate was carefully restored. Today, Georgia's 8,000-year-old winemaking tradition—the oldest wine culture in the world—is proudly preserved while being combined with state-of-the-art technology and modern winemaking innovations.
Head winemaker Lado Uzunashvili is regarded as one of Georgia's most respected winemakers and has gained valuable international experience in countries such as France, Australia and Japan. Working with indigenous grape varieties including Saperavi, Rkatsiteli, Kisi, Mtsvane and Khikhvi, he crafts remarkable wines that introduce Western European wine lovers to an entirely new world of flavours. The vineyards of Vazisubani Estate
Climate
Vazisubani Estate is located in the renowned wine region of Kakheti, at the foot of the Gombori Mountains in the Alazani Valley. The area enjoys a temperate continental climate with Mediterranean influences. Warm, dry summers ensure optimal grape ripening, while the cool nights created by the nearby mountains preserve freshness, natural acidity and aromatic complexity. With more than 2,180 hours of sunshine each year, the grapes achieve outstanding phenolic ripeness without losing their elegance.
Terroir
The vineyards are located on the slopes of the Alazani Valley, at elevations ranging from approximately 350 to 800 metres above sea level. The combination of altitude and cooling mountain breezes creates an ideal microclimate. The soils consist mainly of limestone-rich loam, clay and gravel with a high humus content. These well-draining soils encourage deep root development and give the wines their distinctive minerality, finesse and structure. The terroir is particularly well suited to indigenous Georgian grape varieties such as Rkatsiteli, Kisi, Khikhvi, Kakhuri Mtsvane and Saperavi.
Viticulture
Vazisubani Estate combines centuries-old Georgian traditions with modern precision. The grapes are cultivated with great care in the estate's own vineyards, where sustainability and respect for nature are at the heart of everything they do. From soil management and pruning to harvesting and ageing, every step is carefully monitored to express the unique identity of the terroir.
A significant part of the production is crafted using the 8,000-year-old Qvevri method, in which the wine ferments and matures in large clay amphorae buried underground. During this traditional vinification, the wine remains in contact with the skins and fine lees for several months, creating additional structure, complexity and remarkable character. This ancient technique is combined with modern winemaking expertise under the guidance of head winemaker Lado Uzunashvili, resulting in authentic Georgian wines with international appeal.
